Citizens Advice Portsmouth

Life is complicated – we can help. We're part of a network of charities, a community – we provide free and confidential advice. People rely on us because we're independent and totally impartial.

It is clear that the Covid-19 pandemic and the current cost of living crisis has led to an increase in inequality in society. As a result, we all need to work together to try to improve the mental health and wellbeing of our people. We are very fortunate in Portsmouth to have a fantastic community spirit and many organisations who are working in partnership to improve life outcomes. Citizens Advice Portsmouth is always here to support you but please find below some of the other organisations where you can get help.

The Hive is the city's official community hub. HIVE Portsmouth works with the council, NHS Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group and Solent NHS Trust to coordinate support for vulnerable people and groups. If you are an individual in need of help you can visit the HIVE Portsmouth website where you can find contact details for hundreds of groups and organisations supporting communities across Portsmouth. Or you can call the HIVE Portsmouth helpline on 023 94007124. This line is currently open from 9am-4pm Monday to Friday.

If you live outside of Portsmouth, you can get information, advice and practical support from Hantshelp4vulnerable on 0333 370 4000. This line is currently open from 9am-5pm, seven days a week.

If you need medical help, call the NHS on 111. If it is a medical emergency, call 999.

If you need Help with food, foodbanks provide around 3 days food for your whole household if you can't afford to buy any. Some foodbanks need a referral, and some can help you without being referred. If you need a referral, your support worker or school may be able to refer you, but if not, you can contact Citizens Advice Portsmouth (details at bottom of this page) or Advice Portsmouth – call 023 9279 4340, text 07789 550593 or email [email protected] . You can also contact your local housing office if you are a city council tenant. Portsmouth City Council website page 'Help with Food' has a very comprehensive list of foodbanks, community meals and pantries, larders and other food options. They also list 'Warm spaces, Welcoming spaces' where you can find friendly, warm spaces in your local community where you can meet others, take part in activities, get a warm drink of meal, or spend some quiet time away from your home.

Solent Mind is Hampshire's leading mental health charity. You do not need to be receiving any other kind of mental health support to call them. Telephone 02380 27810 if you are feeling low, anxious or overwhelmed during the current lockdown. You can also contact them on [email protected].

SAD Portsmouth provides a free support group for individuals dealing with stress, anxiety and depression. Friends and family of those suffering from these illnesses are also welcome. Visit their Facebook page, email [email protected] or call 02392 227414.
